Graphic: detainee abuse in Iraq

October 22nd, 2010  |  by James Ball |  Published in Data analysis  |  1 Comment

Perhaps the most damning new findings hidden within the Iraq war logs are those on detainee abuse and torture: the records reveal more than 300 allegations of abuse by coalition troops, and a further 1,300 cases where US soldiers either saw Iraqi forces committing abuse, torture or murder, or received allegations that they were doing so.

The reports also contain orders apparently limiting the investigations made into such abuses, and they show that US soldiers continued to turn over detainees to Iraqi custody, despite their awareness of torture.

The graphic below shows the location of every allegation of abuse the Bureau has found in the logs.

The data in the video is based on manual analysis of more than 1,500 records, either categorised as detainee abuse or containing key words linked to torture and abuse.
